WHOIS Lookup
Look up domain registration data β registrar, registration date, expiry date, nameservers, and domain status flags.
What is WHOIS?
WHOIS is a protocol for looking up registration information for domain names. A lookup reveals which registrar manages the domain, when it was registered and expires, and which nameservers it uses. This information is publicly required as part of domain registration agreements.
RDAP: the modern WHOIS
This tool uses RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol), the modern successor to WHOIS. RDAP returns structured JSON data, is more consistent across registries, and is required by ICANN for all accredited registrars. Most WHOIS tools now use RDAP behind the scenes.
Domain status codes
clientTransferProhibited means the domain cannot be transferred without action from the registrant β a standard protection. clientDeleteProhibited and clientUpdateProhibited prevent deletion and modification. serverTransferProhibited is set by the registry itself, often on high-value domains.
Domain expiry
After expiry, most registrars offer a 30-day grace period for standard renewal, then a 30-day redemption period at higher cost, then the domain is released. Set auto-renew and keep payment information current to avoid accidental expiry of important domains.
